Ampezzo valley is in a natural amphitheatre open to sunbeams and at the same time protected, thanks to the natural wall of the Pomagagnon, which at north, not only represents the marvellous scenery of the town, but also protects it from wind. From "Falzarego" pass the valley extends to "Tre Croci" pass, with the most splendid groups of the Eastern Dolomites all around: Antelao, Sorapiss, Croda da Lago, Tofane, Cristallo and Croda Rossa, which rise in romantic surroundings made of woods, and play with the the rosy colours of the rocks and the shadows, in the many hours of light.
From century of Cadore in the XV century, Cortina d'Ampezzo began its tourist growth in the 2nd half of the 19th century, becoming famous as main centre of the Dolomites at the beginning of the 20th century. With the passage of time it won the name of "Pearl of the Dolomites" and became a tourist resort wellknown all over the globe, loved by artists, princes, intellectuals, offspring and representatives of the international jet-set, who contributed to giving to Cortina its particular charm. However Cortina d'Ampezzo is not only the capital of holidays, but also a place of tradition and culture which offers year round at a very high level art exhibitions, cultural and literary meetings, and organizations of importance such as the Rimoldi picture gallery, the Ethnographic Museum and the "R. Zardini" Palaeontology Museum.
