Carcasonne, Europe's largest fortified citadel, is situated between Toulouse and Montpellie in the south-east of France and is the capital town of the département Aude at the old traffic route from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. Founded in the sixth centrury this unique and picturesque medieval village is situated on a hilltop surrounded with a fortress wall.
