The Piazza del Popolo (People's Square) is one of the most renowned squares in the "Eternal City". The northern gate Porta del Popolo, once the Porta Flaminia, was the beginning of the Via Flaminia, the most important route to the north. The Piazza del Popolo was the traveler's first view of Rome upon arrival. The design of the piazza of today was designed between 1811 und 1822 by Giuseppe Valadier, an Italian architect, in a neoclassical style. In the centre of the piazza stands der Egyptian obelisk Flaminio. In the northern part of the Piazza del Popola lies the Porta del Popolo and the church Santa Maria del Popolo and on the southern edge the twin churches Santa Maria in Monte Santo and Santa Maria dei Miracoli.
