Garmisch-Partenkirchen, situated on the foot of the Zugspitze, is a mountain resort town in Bavaria in the centre of the Werdenfelser Land, a region in Upper Bavaria and a part of the Bavarian Alps, and it is a administrative centre of the district Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Located is the municipality in a wide basin at the confluence of river Partnach, which arises from the Wettersteingebirge, and the river Loisach, which has its sourse in Tyrol. The basin is bounded by the Ammergebirge in the northwest, the Estergebirge in the east and the Wettersteingebirge with the Zugspitze in the south. Garmisch and Partenkirchen were separate towns for many centuries, and still maintain quite separate identities. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a popular touristc destination in summer and winter.
The two most striking mountains around Garmisch-Partenkirchen are the Zugspitze and the Alpspitze and they are located in the Wettersteingebirge.
The Zugspitze, with 2,962 metres above sea level, is the highest mountain in Germany and is located in the south of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the border to Austria. A cog railway, the Bavarian Zugspitz Railway, leads from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Zugspitzplatt from where a cable car runs to the peak. There are also two cable cars that go to the peak from the base of the mountain, one leads from the German side of the mountain at the lake Eibsee (Eibsee Cable Car), and the other ascends from Austria near Ehrwald (Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car).
The Alppitze, with 2,628 metres above sea level, rank as a landmark of Garmisch-Partenkirchen with its pyramidal peak.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen was the site of the Winter Olympic Games 1936 and the World Alpine Ski Championships in 1978 and 2011. A variety of Alpine and Nordic World Cup ski races are held here, usually on the Kandahar Track outside town as well as the Gudiberg with ski-run and the New Olympic Ski Jump. Traditionally, a ski jumping contest is held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on New Year's Day, as a part of the Four Hills Tournament (Vierschanzen-Tournee).
