This magnificent palace was built in the 16th century and it became a hotel in 1812 and has been recently restored. The Imperial Hotel Tramontano has been patronized by nobility and royalty, including Empress Maria Alexandrowna of Russia, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and Edward VII as Prince of Wales in 1862 and later as King of Great Britain. The west wing of the Imperial Hotel Tramontano is the historical bithplace of the celebrated Italian poet Torquato Tasso on March 11th 1544. The Tramontano sheltered many great people of the literary world as Goethe and Byron. The old 18th-century court is today a winter garden, decorated with antique statues and exotic plants. The lobby, with its file of panoramic windows opens out into spacious public rooms containing antique furniture and paintings and soft Persian carpets. The beautiful gardens have been designed by English gardeners at the end of the 19th century and conserve rare sub-tropical and Mediterranean trees. Surrounded by local lemon and orange plants and from Camelias of all ages.
