Zermatt, at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn, is a world without cars. Electric-cars and horse-drawn sleighs and carriages are the only transport allowed. Well-groomed ski runs, sign-posted walking paths, cross-country skiing tracks, summer and winter sports facilities of every kind imaginable - Zermatt leaves nothing to be desired. Whoever takes a holiday here will find everything they need: relaxation, peace and quiet in healthy mountain air and unspoilt nature. Variety, shopping and a vast offer of leisure activities in a lively town. Guests are spoilt in mountain restaurants, cosy Raclette places, speciality restaurants and gourmet temples. And those who do not want to go to bed early can take a pick from a variety of bars and nightclubs that are open until the small hours.
Steeped in tradition, the Seiler Hotel Monte Rosa was the first hotel in the Matterhorn village. Opened in 1839 by the local doctor, it was at that time the only village inn and boasted three rooms. The Hotel was taken over by the Seiler family in 1853. Its guests include Edward Whymper, the first conqueror of the Matterhorn, and numerous other mountaineers. Over the years the hotel has been extended and refurbished on several occasions. It was recently upgraded to meet the demanding standards currently expected of an international hotel, yet without losing the homely ambiance and charm of a traditional turn-of-the-century alpine hotel. This is reflected in the various lounges and salons, the historical dining room, one of the most beautiful in the Alps, the billiard room and the Montrose Bar.
