A brief history

Hotel Palais Coburg Hotel Residenz: ExteriorThe Palais Coburg was built between 1840-1845 on the foundations of the ?Braun? bastion, a section of Vienna?s fortifications dating back to the 16th century. Consequently, a considerable portion of the old bulwark was preserved, in particular the ancient casemates. The architect Karl Schleps was commissioned by Prince Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha to design the Palais.

One notable feature of the Late Classicist architecture are the free-standing columns in the middle section of the fa?ade, which quickly gave the Palais the nickname ?asparagus castle? among the locals. The Palais remained in the possession of the family until 1978 with some members continuing to reside there until 1994.

After changing hands several times, the Palais Coburg was bought by the POK Pühringer Private Foundation in 1997 and renovated in close cooperation with the project's historic architect Dr. Klaus-Peter Högel and the Vienna Historical Monuments Department.
