Hotel Palatium, Via Marina Grande 225, 80073 Capri / Italy. Capri is the only island of the Parthenopean Gulf which is not of volcanic origin in this beautiful area which is almost exclusively volcanic. Archeological excavations at the beginning of this century have confirmed, that Capri has been settled since the Late Stone Age. Formerly Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula formed a solid block when the Phlegrean volcanoes were at their most active,. The very heart of Capri island is Piazza Umberto I: This is a closed-off square and small, thus resembling a courtyard. Around the square there is the former bishop's residence, today host to the municipal offices; the Clock Tower "Torre dell'Orologio", possibly the belltower of the old cathedral; a number of cafes and elegant boutiques; and to the left, the church of San Stefano. The island of Capri, having no natural port, was accessible only from a small beach - probably one of the reasons it has been preferred by emperor Tiberius, but necessity of course required the building of a port. The ruins of the ancient Roman port, which are still visible, are situated to the west, at Point Vivara, giving direct access to the Imperial Villa of Palazzo a Mare. The today's port can be found further east and is a hsutle and bustle of boats and hydrofoils coming from and going to other points of the Gulf of Naples. There can be found also the tourist marina, where beautuful sailboats and yachts from all over the globe steer into Capri. The beautyful Hotel Paltium is located near the Palazzo a Mare, the ruins of a Roman villa, probably the summer residence of Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Being the only Hotel at splendid Capri island which descends to the turquoise Mediterranean sea, it offers direct access to a beach as well as magnificent views of entire Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius behind it.
