Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese, Via Lombardia 47, 00187 Rome, Italy. Villa Borghese is a magnificent landscape garden in the style of an English garden in Rome with several buildings, mueseums, such as the Galleria Borghese, and attractions. The villa and the huge park, with as size of 148 acres, was originally the sommer residence of the noble family Borghese. In 1605, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a nephew of Pope Paul V, began turning this former vineyard into the most extensive gardens built in Rome since the antiquity. Scipione Borghese, son of Francisco Caffarelli and Ortensia Borghese, was an Italian Renaissance Cardinal and an art collector and a patron of arts. The gardens are the second largest public park in Rome after the Villa Doria Pamphili. The Villa Borghese gardens were developed for the Villa Pinciana (Borghese Villa on the Pincian Hill) and designed by the architects Giavanni Vasanzio and Flaminio Ponzio. The Borghese Gallery (Galleria Borghese) housed in the former Villa Borghese Pinciana and is a famous art art gallery in Rome. The Galleria Borghese hosts a substantial part of the Borghese collection of paintings, sculpture and antiques, began by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. The Villa Medici is a mannerist villa and an architectural complex with a garden contiguous with the larger Borghese gardens, on the Pincian Hill next to Trinità dei Monti in Rome. This villa is a part of the ancient villa and gardens of Lucius Lucullus and was built from 1564 to 1574 by Nanni di Baccio Bigio and from 1568 aloso from Annibale Lippi. Villa Medici was named after Cardinal Ferdinando de'Medici, who has aquired the property in 1576 for his ancient art collection. Today the property is in the possession of the French state and since 1803 the Académie des Beaux-Arts is housed in the villa. The fountain in the front of the Villa Medici is formed from a red granite vase from ancient Rome. It was designed by Annibale Lippi in 1589. The view from the Villa looking over the fountain towards St Peter's in the distance has been much painted, but the trees in the foreground have now obscured the view.
