… with state-of-the-art conveniences and 21st-century interior design.
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and owes its economic prosperity to its long tradition as a commercial city and port. Founded in 810 by Charlemagne, it was for centuries a walled city. Set on the River Elbe that flows into the North Sea, Hamburg is a key commercial hub and one of Europe's largest cultural and media centres.
Hamburg's cultural diversity is renowned, from the Hamburg State Opera with regular works by Mozart and Verdi, and the Hamburg Musikhalle that stages both classical and contemporary musical performances, through to the alternative up-and-coming cultural scene of St Pauli and the infamous Reeperbahn district where a host of clubs and discos has rejuvenated this section of the city. With over 30 theatres, including two State Theatres, and 40 museums, the cultural traditions of the Hanseatic City are flourishing.
Hamburg is a showplace of modern architecture as much of the old city was destroyed in World War II. The Altstadt (Old Town) has little left of the original architecture, but the 19th-century Rathaus (City Hall) is well worth a visit. The Kuntshalle is North Germany's leading art museum with works from the 14th century to German Impressionism and 20th-century artists such as Edvard Munch and Paul Klee.
Further popular attractions include the TV Tower, Port of Hamburg, Hagenbeck Zoo, the Panoptikum (Wax Museum), the Planetarium and Alster Lake.
With 11 major shopping malls, Hamburg is a shopper's paradise. Mönckebergstrasse is the city's traditional shopping district.
Park Hyatt Hamburg is located in the historic Levantehaus, an exclusive shopping arcade with numerous boutiques, jewellery stores and a selection of restaurants.
