The Avenue des Champs-Élysées is one of the most prestigious avenues in the world and is located in the northwestern part of Paris in the 8th arrondissement. The Avenue des Champs-Élysées is bounded in the east by the Place de la Concorde and in the west by the Place Charles de Gaulle with the Arc de Triomphe. The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famaous monuments in Paris and is sitated in the centre of the Place Charles-de-Gaulle, originally named Place de l'Etoile, at the west end of the Champs-Élysées. The avenue runs two kilometres through the 8th arrondissements and forms a part of the "Axe historique". One of the principal tourist destinations in Paris, the lower part of the Champs-Élysées is bordered by greenery (Carré Marigny) and by buildings such as the Théātre Marigny and the Grand Palais (containing the Palais de la Découverte). The Élysée Palace, the official residence of the President of the French Republic, is slightly to the north, but not on the avenue itself. Further to the west, the avenue is lined with cinemas, cafés and restaurants (most notably Fouquet's), and luxury specialty shops.
The Place de la Concorde is located on the eastern end of the Champs-Élysées in the 8th arrondissement and is the largest square in the French capital. The square was designed in 1755 and filled with statues and fountains, the area was named Place Louis XV to honor the king at that time. The centre of the Place is occupied by a giant Egyptian obelisk decorated with hieroglyphics exalting the reign of the pharaoh Ramses II.
