The View at the Spanish Steps, Via Condotti 85-91, 00187 Rome, Italy. The Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) are a monumental stairway of 138 steps between Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the church of Santa Trinità dei Monti, and the Piazza Spagna at the base with the Fontana della Barcaccia (English: Fountain of the Old Boat) a Baroque fountain, just below the Spanish Steps. The Spanish Steps have been built by Francesco De Sanctis, an Italian baroque architect. A charateristic is the architectural characteristic of the Spanish Steps and in this way De Sanctis refers to the Holy Trinity of the church of Santa Trinità dei Monti. Some of the stairs have a convex shave while other have a concave shape to enhance the impressive effect of the steps. The Piazza di Spagna, situated at the foot of the Spanish Steps, consists of two unequal triagles. The Spanish Steps connects the Piazza with the church Santa Trinità dei Monti at the northern part of the square. The Fontana della Barcaccia, a early baroque fountain built by Pietro Bernini, the father of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, in the years 1627 to 1629, is located also in the northern part. At the southern part of Piazza di Spagna is the Palazzo di Spagna located since 1620. The Spanish Steps got their name from the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See which was located in the piazza. The Via dei Condotti is a world-famous busy and fashionable street in Rome and it begins at the foot of the Spanish steps at Piazza di Spagna. This street is the centre of designer boutiques in Rome since the opening of the atelier of Bulgari in 1905. Many important designers, such as Armani, Cartier, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermès and Louis Vuitton, have stores on Via Condotti and others, like Laura Biagiotti, have their offices there.
