Poets from Catullus and Virgil to Longfellow and Tennyson have raved about the beauty of the subalpine lakes of the Lombardy in northern Italy. But when trying to describe the unlimited beauty of Lago di Como, it is impossible to do justice whithout having visited and understood it. This lake is approx. 45 kilometres (28 miles) long and never more than 3 kilometres (2 miles) wide. White ferries and private boats travel picturesquely up and down its waters, offering views of the most important villas, such as Villa del Balbianello and Villa Pizzo, Villa Carlotta and of course Villa d'Este. A less-than-two-hours boat ride takes guests from the pier of the scenic town of Cernobbio to Bellagio, the "Pearl of the Lake" - the most picturesque village of Lake Como.
Cernobbio is a little romantic comune with about 7,000 inhabitants in the Italian province of Como in the region of Lombardy on the banks of Lake Como. Cernobbio is situated close to the border with Switzerland at the mouth of River Breggia in Lago di Como. The town Como is located five kilometres in the south of Cernobbio.

This deluxe-hotel is located in its own maginificent lush gardens. The lower part of the gardens are designed in a Renaissance style. The two most important landmarks are the mosaic with its Nympheum from the 16th century and the 500 year old plane tree. Apart from the topiary hedges and the bushes of bamboo, azaleas, camellias, oleanders, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, there are roses and jasmine bushes. The trees range from chestnut, magnolia, wisteria, palm, cypress, pine, ilex, privet to many others.
The hotel's lobby and the public rooms, its corridors and the guestrooms, all of them are lavishly decorated with original art works and antique furniture giving Villa d'Este truly a palatial ambience. On the Villa's ground floor the Colonne Room with its biblical paintings is worth a visit as in the Canova Bar the 16th century Adam and Eve Carrara marble statues by Marco Antonio Prestinari or the marvellous statue of Eros and Psyche from the School of Antonio Canova in the Flora Room.
Villa d'Este offers 152 guestrooms and suites. The main house built in 1568 and known as the Cardinal's building offers 125 guestrooms and suites while the trompe l'oeil masterpiece known as the Queen's Pavilion, inaugurated in 1860, has 27 guestrooms and suites. In 1873 the two Villas combined into one property became Villa d'Este. Villa d'Este also offers two private villas on the grounds of the hotel, the Villa Cima and the Villa Malakoff.
Guests at the Villa d'Este can enjoy several culinary delights in two restaurants with Italian haute cuisine and a variety of regional dishes, and a wide range of finest wines, as well as three bars and the D'Este Club.
The Sporting Club, with fitness centre, steam bath, sauna, indoor pool, squash and golf simulator, is interconnected by an underground passage to the Cardinal Villa with the SPA situated on its first floor. The hotel offers also three pools, the unique pool on the lake, an indoor pool and a kid's pool.
The eleven meeting and banquet rooms at the Villa d'Este are the perfect venue for exclusive business and social meetings for uo to 400 people in an elegant ambience. All meeting rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
